Oxford County Probate Court

Oxford County Probate Court was established under the Maine Constitution in 1820 and is one of 16 such probate courts within the State of Maine, i.e., one for each county. Oxford County Probate Court has jurisdiction in this County over specialized subject matter such as estates and trusts, adoptions, name changes, and guardianship and conservatorship proceedings. Oxford County Probate Court sits without a jury. The Judge of Probate presides over the matters requiring hearing. Probate Court is scheduled for the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.

The Register of Probate duties are quasi-judiciary. The Register is authorized under Maine law to conduct Informal Probate proceedings, and without prior notice to interested persons, to

probate a will or make appointment of a personal representative. Administratively, the Register of Probate is responsible to the Judge of Probate for the preparation and recording of Court records and to the County Commissioners for personnel and financial matters.

Both the Judge of Probate and the Register of Probate are elected positions. The Register is a full-time county employee while the Judge serves on a part-time basis.

The Judge of Probate for Oxford County is Dana C Hanley, Esq. He has served in that capacity since January 1, 1997.  

The Register of Probate is Tom J. Winsor. He was appointed by Governor King to serve out the term of the former Register, Ted Tracy. Mr. Tracy retired in December 2002.  Prior to his appointment Register Winsor served in the Legislature for 8 years representing the towns of Greenwood, Norway, Waterford, and West Paris.  Register Winsor was elected to serve his first four year term in November 2004.

The Deputy Register of Probate is Carol J. Gutekunst. She has been employed in the probate office since 1987. The Probate Clerk is Patricia Falkner, a part-time employee since 2003.

Registry of Probate hours are: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. M-F except holidays.
