DO YOU KNOW?
Oxford County is one of two Counties in the
State with two registries.
The other is Aroostook.
Property records for the towns of:
Stoneham, Stow,
Lovell, Fryeburg, Brownfield,
Denmark,
Porter and Hiram are kept at the Western District Office located at 12 Portland Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037.
All
other records for towns and unorganized territories in the County are kept in
South Paris.
THE RECORDING PROCESS
Upon arrival at our office each document is entered into our computer system
which automatically assigns an instrument number and book and page. Documents are then indexed and scanned into
the computer database from which they may be printed for those wishing
copies. Records are preserved in two
places for safety in the event of a fire or other disaster.
WHAT RECORDS ARE GENERALLY
RECORDED IN THE REGISTRY?
Deeds, mortgages, discharges, liens, abstracts of divorce, abstracts of
probate, land installment contracts, powers of attorney, court papers, and
anything affecting the ownership of land including subdivision plans and
standard boundary surveys.
WILL REGISTRY
RECORDS HELP ME WITH GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH?
All records are filed here by the date the transaction took place, so if you
have a name and an approximate year, you may be able to find your ancestor's
records of land dealings in the County.
MODERNIZING THE REGISTRY
Space is always a problem in the preservation of records, which was
recognized by former Register Olive Moore who began re-filming books into the
compact book system now in place. This project was completed in 1997.
Beginning in October of 2003, a new computer system
has enabled us to scan all documents directly into our database. This will enable us to cease making books
by the end of 2004 and solve the need for additional space.
By the end of 2004 records back to 1971, Book 711
will be available on the internet at www.mainelandrecords.com. Cumberland and Somerset Counties
will also be available on this site.
Future projects will including getting all plans
into the computer system. This will be
completed as funds from the surcharge fund are available.
The public can access most records at the registry
through the use of five computer stations in the vault.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Oxford County East Registry of
Deeds is to record all documents promptly and efficiently; preserving them
for the future; to provide reliable access to these records, assisting the
public in research efforts; and to serve with professionalism.
